"This house is haunted" - a perfect opening line for this pre-Halloween show for rising folk trio Oliver Hazard from Ohio. It was impossible not to be charmed by their talent, earnestness and story; images on the screen behind them depicted the filming of their first cross-country tour, tiny lamps onstage to remind themselves of all the small living room house parties they had played over the years to get to a point where they were playing bigger venues and festivals, the toothpaste tubes fans brought to replenish their low tour supply.
OH has a gift for writing catchy tunes, there weren't any that our group didn't enjoy. Standouts included "Grenadine", "Blood Moon", "Dandelion" and tour namesake "Wild Eyed Blue"
I learned to sing
To sing your name I learned to fight
And cut my wings, for you to fly
Anywhere you go
In this wild eyed blue
Every dream I sold, every lie I told, just to be with you
While their songs are indie pop folk and filled with great hooks, the playing feels fuller than just acoustic and electric guitar and keys due to a kick drum, extra tambourine, etc. They use great three-part harmonies and some crowd participation to keep everyone engaged.
Space Ballroom was the ideal vibe for this act tonight. Catch them while you can in the smaller venues - the smiles on the young faces in the crowd who knew every word foretold a success just beginning to materialize.
Shoutout to Haven Beer Company for an amazing pre-show dinner as well.
